Together from New York(NY), Norway(N), and Denmark(DK), NYNDK unites three places that have significant roles in jazz history. Established in 2003, its founding members are Danish pianist Soren Moller, Norwegian saxophonist Ole Mathisen, and American trombonist Chris Washburne. Their decision to form this collaborative was inspired by their own experiences of the truly international nature of jazz. NYNDK brings to the mix a combination of refined Scandinavian cool with aggressive New York heat spiced with a progressive postmodern sensibility.
Chris Washburne has been called “one of the best trombonists” by Peter Watrous (The New York Times). As a trombonist he currently freelances in New York City performing and recording for Latin, jazz, pop, and classical groups including, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, Anthony Braxton, Jacki Byard, Mark Anthony, and Ruben Blades. He leads his own band SYOTOS, the busiest and most in demand Latin jazz group in New York. Their three recordings “Nuyorican Nights,” “The Other Side,” and “Paradise In Trouble” on Jazzheads Records have received rave reviews. He received his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Columbia University where he wrote a dissertation on the New York Salsa scene. His book on Salsa will be published by Temple University Press in 2005. He is an assistant professor of music at Columbia University and the Founder and Director of Columbia’s Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program.
Ole Mathisen is a native of Sandefjord, Norway and current resident of New York. He has worked on more than 80 records and has toured extensively throughout the world, and he has recorded with internationally-recognized artists such as Louie Vega, Eddie Gomez, Peter Erskine, Randy Brecker, and Paula Cole to name a few. A member of SYOTOS, and the leader of ANOMALY, Mathisen composes for film and TV, produces records, and arranges music for fellow musicians.
Soren Moller is an original jazz experience. To hear his slippery fingers attack the keys is a unique listening experience even for those folks who find jazz complex. Indeed it is, but Sorens interpretation of his compositions in odd meter rhythms, not so familiar to most, is music you’ll want to hear over and over again. Just listen to his debut cd called “Let There Be Love” (Live with his trio). Full of improvisation and melody, you can still hear what it is that makes an audience play the tunes in their own heads.
Soren Moller is educated at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, Denmark. He has a Masters Degree in Jazz Piano from Manhattan School of Music in New York. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, B.B. King Lounge, The Jazz Standard, Cornelia Street Cafe and more. He was taught by Kenny Barron, Fred Hersch, Garry Dial among others. Soren Moller is releasing his debut cd “Let There Be Love Live”, recorded live at the Copenhagen JazzHouse, Denmark.
